Route 8 Pollinator Project

Route 8 Pollinator Project

In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation 5 1/2 acres were planted by the Northwest Pennsylvania Chapter of Pheasants Forever at the on and off ramps on the south side of Interstate 90′s intersection with Route 8. The Pheasants Forever project, which completed some preparation in the fall of 2019, followed by a spring planting, will be the first large-scale volunteer effort undertaken in the area by PENNDOT.  The chapter expects to spend about $800 and will provide all volunteer labor to prepare the area, plant the seeds and maintain the plantings, Moss said. The funding comes from the chapter’s annual banquet.

Habitat improvement projects are central to Pheasants Forever chapters, Chapter 728 in the past has developed habitat on state game lands 109 and 218 near Waterford.

While the I-90/Route 8 project will not provide habitat for pheasants, without a healthy pollinator population, wild game forage, just like farm crops, will suffer. He also points out that the project will beautify the area and relieve PENNDOT from mowing several acres.
